    According to the Bookmaker William Hill, more than £100 million online bets will be placed on the Euro 2004 football tournament, cerating a new online betting record for a single sporting event. 


    A Dutch Court in Arnhem has delivered a favorable ruling for Ladbrokes this month in the case brought by the Netherlands' sports betting monopoly, De Lotto. The court rejected the Dutch betting monopoly's attempt to block Ladbrokes's online gambling services to Dutch residents.

    Bettors meeting at Churchill Downs and at racetracks and simulcast outlets throughout North America wagered a record $99,348,706 on the Derby!

    After two victories on the World Poker Tour, 27-year-old Erick Lindgren from Las Vegas won the first WPT Player of the Year award. Lindgren won two tournaments in the Tour's second season and he also made the final table at the Grand Prix de Paris, making his total winnings $1,560,568.

    The island of Malta is about to join the list of international gambling jurisdictions. George M. Mangion, whose company, PKF Fiduciaries has been promoting Malta as an e-betting and e-gaming base, says the licences will be an excellent tool to stimulate the economy and create employment. 

    He said: “Malta potentially qualifies as a low-cost, high-tech domicile for online casinos and e-gaming operations. Malta understands the commercial realities facing the e-gaming industry and therefore has adopted a commercially realistic approach towards regulating the industry. Certainly it combines a stable political and communications structure with a competitive tax structure.”

    In Malaysia, where gambling is illegal, ten people were arrested for taking football bets. A personal computer displaying a fixture list from an international football tournament, 22 PC monitors, a fax, three TVs and four cellular phones were also taken in the raid.

    According to US research firm IRS, gambling is the most banned workplace activity. They claim that 85% of US firms have an Internet usage policy for the use of the Internet in the workplace.

    Professional poker player Ashley Revell, 32, from Kent England, gambled £76,840 on a Las Vegas casino roulette table. He placed all his money on red - and won £153,680. He said afterwards, "The first thing I am going to do is buy some new clothes."

    The World Trade Organization has ruled in favor of Antigua and Barbuda in a free trade dispute concerning the prohibition of online gambling by the US. "This is justice done and a victory for the WTO dispute system..[]...the U.S. is under an obligation to repeal their laws" said Sir Ronald Sanders, Antigua's ambassador to the WTO. The ruling is due to be published this month and the United States is expected to appeal.
